I recently read this book for a book club and loved it. Song for a Whale is by: Lynne Kelly with a lexile of 800 and is realistic fiction. Iris is named after a whale that pasted away on the shore the day she was born, it was her Grandma's idea. Iris is deaf and so are her grandparents. One day in class her teacher showed her class a video about Blue 55 a whale with a 55 hertz song while most whales have a 35 hertz. She realizes he is a lot like her, swimming around many years having no one to talk to or that can understand her. Blue 55's parents are to different kinds of whales. Due to his different song the others can not understand him and when he tries to make the other whales' songs it won't come out. As Iris researches more and more about Blue 55 and talked to the music teacher about recreating Blue 55's song. Eventually she is ready to try and see Blue 55.
